Spring Athletics Reviews
Baseball
The baseball season started slowly as we worked to integrate six new players that were new to varsity baseball. As we developed a team built around speed and pitching we hit a streak of 7 wins in a nine game stretch. Our season ended with a loss to Dansville in Districts. Both Deondre Callanhan and Kyle Shoenmaker set school records, each stealing more than 50 bases during the season. Deondre, Kyle, and Mike Garza led our team in hitting each hitting over .400 for the season. Mike Garza and Kyle Lurvey led the pitching staff each striking out more than 70 of the opposing batters that they faced.

Golf
The boy’s golf switched from fall to spring this year because of the MHSAA lawsuit Supreme Court decision. It was a challenge to practice at the golf dome and then outside in 38 degree temps. This was my first year as Head Coach. I had a wonderful assistant coach, John Splawn. My goal for the year and the future of the program is to “raise the bar” from where it was. This began with John Splawn and I committed to teaching where we can better each player’s swing and knowledge of the game. We made a huge step forward by securing a relationship with College Fields golf course in Okemos as our practice and home course – I cannot stress enough how huge a move this was. Other SMAA coaches raved about the course and our hosted Jamboree on May 7. We had a disappointing year as we finished last in the SMAA but we were competitive all year. David Rynties received first team all conference in the SMAA and was our medalist all year. Matt Lureau qualified as an individual to advance from the Districts to the Regionals. Matt had his best round of the year at Regionals but fell just short of qualifying for State Finals. We believe that we can get the Boys golf program even more competitive in the next few years as we build the program.

Softball
The softball team’s record was 3-7 which does not properly represent the skills of the girls. 7 team members were lost to graduation and other teams because of the season change. This season was similar to our first year two years ago. This year was a learning year, of the 10 players we had 6 returning and 4 new players, Coach Salsbury and I were pleased with the development of our four new players and impressed with the continued growth of returning six “veteran” players. We played predominately junior varsity teams but seemed to play better when we played varsity teams. It is our goal to reach the strictly varsity level with in the next few years. Our young players are very talented athletes and show much promise for the future. The team hopes to get started on a softball diamond on the campus of LCS this summer, which will make practice and games visible and bring more interest to the sport. Over the past 3 years I have had many positive complements on the softball teams attitude and sportsmanship. It is a privilege for me to be able to coach a softball team. But it is even greater to work with a group of girls who are willing to learn a new sport, work hard, succeed, and eve fail while maintaining a positive Christian influence. A big thank you to the Softball team for their hard work and all they have accomplished.

Tennis
Several players on the 2008 tennis team held a tennis racquet for the very first time this year, while the schools they faced were all larger teams whose players have been playing competitive tennis since middle school. This was a season in which the tennis team stepped up to the challenge to “get game” and they have defied the odds with their remarkable successes both individually and as a team. Between the Dual and Tournament Matches our Lady Pilgrims amassed 827 game victories and 27 (best 2 out of 3 set) individual match wins, the fuel that propelled our Lady Pilgrims to achieve new heights this season! We earned a respectable 5th Place Team Finish in the S.M.A.A. All 12 of our Lady Pilgrims competing in the S.M.A.A. Conference Tournament, won at least one of their individual matches and, as a result, each of our singles and doubles positions contributed 2-6 points, to the LCS Team’s 31 point total!

Track
We started the season with many new players in key roles. We counted on our upperclassmen to help bring them along. We had a number of injuries at the beginning of the year, which made it tough for us to get any continuity early on. Halfway through the year we were finally all healthy and started to gain confidence. We had a good run at the end of the year leading into districts where we played Dansville (whom we tied earlier in the season). We had the lead twice and ended up losing 3-2, with Dansville scoring in the final 4 minutes. It was a great game and a good season. Even though the track team did experience some low numbers for the girls we still had a very good season. The only four girls on the team worked hard in practice and at the meets. All of them saw personal best this year. On the boy’s side, everyone experienced personal best this year. Among some of the most memorable performances, Senior Randall Deeb ran a 54.13 in the 400 Meters while Trevor Youngquist had a personal best of 54.9 seconds in the 400 and won his first race this year. Overall this season while very difficult and trying was very good. The team stuck together, supported one another and we had a lot of fun.

Offered Sports Teams:
Athletics are an exciting piece of the Lansing Christian School experience. Many athletic teams are started due to parent/student interest so teams at the elementary and middle school vary from year to year.
