LCS Stories

Mr. Tjarks – teacher

What do you teach at LCS?

9th and 10th grade World History, 11th grade US History and AP United States History, 12th grade American Government, Electives: Current Events, World War II

How does your teaching equip students for the future?

I want students to have a foundation in the social studies and history that helps them make sense of their world. This can help them to be aware of things going on around them, involved in their communities, and faithful to their savior in the process.

What is a unique experience, talent or interest that you bring to your classroom to help shape the learning experience of your students?

I have a passion for learning about history and Government and I enjoy reading many things related to these topics. I always hope that if I teach “with my hair on fire” with enthusiasm, humor, and strong content knowledge, then students will appreciate my classes.

What are your interests or hobbies outside of school?

I enjoy attending live music concerts, playing the electric guitar, and reading.

What is something you’ve accomplished that you’re proud of?

I have taught 9 different social studies classes in three different schools over my twenty plus year teaching career. I have also led twelve student trips to Gettysburg. Being a dad to my children, William and Evelyn, makes me more proud than any career accomplishments.

What’s your “catch-phrase” or something you’re constantly saying to your students?

“Let’s go back and listen to that explosion sound effect again!”

What is your deep hope for your students?

My students will be knowledgeable and active citizens who will positively contribute to their communities and nation. They will also be faithful Christians who seek to live out their faith and pass it down to the next generation.

What do you hope students will remember about you or your class?

I hope they remember the humorous stories and inside jokes that make history so fun, but more importantly, I hope that students use history to grow in wisdom.

What do you love most about LCS?

As a parent of LCS students and a teacher, I love being a part of a community of believers with a supportive environment with high standards and a culture of excellence.
