MATH WITH A PURPOSE

At Lansing Christian School, mathematics is more than numbers and formulas, it’s a means of developing wise and discerning thinkers who can apply God‑given truth to real challenges in life. Our approach helps students see how math connects to everyday decisions, stewardship of resources, and faithful service in God’s world.

In Mrs. Hileman’s Pre‑Calculus class, students examined the “real cost” of a college education using exponential functions and financial models. Working together, they:

• Researched tuition, room and board, and textbook costs
• Calculated loan payments and compared repayment scenarios
• Analyzed how monthly payments relate to potential future income
• Reflected on what these numbers mean for personal financial stewardship

Students then presented their findings to classmates, showing that, when all costs and interest were accounted for, the true cost of education could exceed the original tuition by 1.5 times. By connecting math to a real-life decision, students gained insight into personal responsibility and wise planning.
