2023 LCS Alumni Basketball Games

On Friday, December 29, 2023, LCS hosted two alumni basketball games with 36 alumni players, as well as many more alumni joining the fun.

The girls game (alum vs. alum) began with our Head of School, Wendy Hofman, who played basketball all through high school at LCS (1977-81), throwing the ceremonial tip-off. Among the girls team participants, 17 different LCS classes were represented, ranging from 1986 to 2023. Four players were members of the LCS girls state championship teams from 2003 and 2004, and three players have coached or currently coach LCS basketball. Two additional alum participated in the evening by coaching a team. It was an exciting and fun effort between the two alumni teams.

Next, the boys played a game between the current LCS Varsity Boys Basketball team and alumni. The alumni team included five members of the LCS 2017 state semifinalist team. The game started off with a signature alley-oop dunk on a pass from alum Forrest Bouyer to Preston Granger. This began the excitement that continued through the night. The boys alumni team was coached by Baylor Brogan (Class of 2023), who had suffered a season-ending injury playing in last year’s alumni game. He surprised the stands by jumping in to play in the last couple of minutes of this year’s game, and scored five highly-celebrated points.

Alumni Laurie Iverson, Cathy Bytwerk, and Sharon Sommerville have each been a part of LCS staff and athletics for over four decades.

Between the games, the National Anthem was beautifully led by Cam Damesworth (Class of 2023). Laurie Iversen, LCS Class of 1975, ran the scoreboard for the contests, as she has done faithfully for years. Joining Laurie was retired LCS teacher Sharon Sommerville, who ran the scorebook for high school basketball over the years. Both Laurie and Sharon taught at LCS and have been part of the athletic program for over 40 years; they were both inducted into the Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2016.

Once a Pilgrim, always a Pilgrim. This evening was a fun and special reunion for so many who have been a part of the LCS basketball and greater school community.
