The Formative Gift of Chapel
The Formative Gift of Chapel
At Lansing Christian School, one of the most treasured rhythms of community life is the opportunity for students in every grade to gather together for weekly chapel. In a world filled with noise, distraction, and hurried schedules, chapel provides a time to turn our attention to the Lord, to hear His Word, to pray together, and to be reminded of the truths that give meaning to our lives.
One of the unique blessings of our chapel program is that students of every age participate together. Younger students sit alongside older students, learning by example as they join in singing hymns and songs of praise, listening to Scripture, and participating in the life of the school community. In these gatherings, each member has a place and faith is nurtured across generations.
In our middle and high school, students are given opportunities to lead portions of chapel through music, Scripture reading, prayer, and other acts of service. As they use their gifts to serve their peers, they learn that leadership is rooted not in recognition but in faithful action. At the same time, our faculty members model thoughtful Christian discipleship, helping students engage in chapel with attentiveness and joy. With our youngest students, eager participation, heartfelt singing, and childlike faith are a source of encouragement to the entire LCS community. Parents are always welcome to attend chapel. It is a beautiful reminder that God’s work of formation begins early and continues throughout a lifetime.
The habits we cultivate shape the people we become. In a Christ-centered liberal arts education, we seek not only to inform minds but also to form hearts. Chapel plays an essential role in that formation. Each week, students are invited to meditate on the goodness and faithfulness of God, and to recognize that all truth, beauty, and wisdom find their source in Him. Over time, these shared moments leave a lasting imprint. Through prayer, singing, Scripture, and reflection, students learn gratitude, humility, attentiveness, and wonder. They are reminded that education is not merely preparation for a career, but equipping for a life of faithful service to God and neighbor.
At LCS, chapel is a cornerstone of our school and a vital part of our mission to educate students to exalt God and follow Christ all their lives.
